Moving the region's freight by rail, moving trucks off the road and moving our economy forward for growth.

Move NY&NJ is a coalition of concerned leaders from the region's business, labor, environmental, community and planning sectors that is dedicated to improving the region's freight transportation system through the construction of a Cross Harbor Rail Freight tunnel underneath New York Harbor.

The tunnel is the most crucial infrastructure investment for our region's future growth and sustainability. Freight movement through our region is projected to increase 70 percent or more in the next 20 years. The choice is ours to make today: highway gridlock or long term investments that enable us to move freight by rail, move trucks off the road and move our economy forward for growth.

The Cross Harbor Rail Freight Tunnel would provide a Hudson River crossing to connect freight railroads in New Jersey to railroads in Brooklyn. Such a connection would enable freight to travel to east-of-Hudson destinations by rail, rather than truck.

  • Rail cars are four times more energy efficient than trucks and dramatically safer, associated with three times fewer accidents than trucks, while one freight train can transport as much freight as 200 trucks, lessening road congestion.
  • 92 percent of the region's goods are transported by truck versus an average of 60 percent in all other major metropolitan regions. In the east-of-the-Hudson region, less than 2 percent of freight travels by rail.
  • Freight trains bound for the east-of Hudson region are forced to go 140 miles north to Selkirk, NY near Albany just to cross the river, a diversion the inhibits the competitiveness of rail as a mode of freight transport.
